Nepali basic lessons

If you only want to learn one word in Nepali, this would be "Namaste" (pronounced "na-ma-stay"). This word literaly means "I bow to the divine in you", but is used everyday to say "Hello". "Namaste" is usually spoken with a slight bow and hands pressed together, palms touching fingers and fingers pointing upwards, thumbs close to the chest.

  • Warm water - Ta-to pa-ni
  • I am vegetarian - Ma sah-ka-ha-ri hun
  • I don't like spicy food - Ma pi-ro khan-di-na
  • rice (cooked) - Bhat
  • fresh beer - Chi-so bi-yar

  • I don't understand - Mai-lay bujhi-na
  • Can you repeat?  - Ta-paï bi-sta bol-nu-hos
